Armenian State Symphony Orchestra
Focus on the Caucasus
The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra has been the country’s most important training ground for young talent over the last twelve years. The young musicians, under the direction of Sergey Smbatyan, present a new cello concerto by the composer Eduard Hayrapetyan, along with other works.
The internationally celebrated orchestra, which normally performs works by Armenian, Russian and European composers, has put together a programme of exclusively Armenian music for their concert at the Caucasus Festival. Aram Khachaturian’s Second Symphony from the year 1943 – a piece of grave, unrelenting power – has often been interpreted as a musical statement in opposition to the Second World War.
The new cello concerto by contemporary composer Eduard Hayrapteyan, whose oeuvre reveals a predilection for the solo concerto form, is performed by Narek Hakhnazaryan. The 29-year-old former protégé of Mstislav Rostropovich has already played with a number of distinguished musical partners, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam.
