Anchiskhati Choir
Schwerpunkt Kaukasus
The musical tradition of Georgia, a republic in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, is one of the oldest in the world. Archaeological findings show that the first musical instruments existed here as long ago as in the 15th century BC. Music scholars are fond of describing the small country as the birthplace of all folk music traditions. In 2001, UNESCO added Georgian polyphonic singing to its list of the »Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity«. One of the oldest centres of this ancient musical tradition is the Anchiskhati basilica in Tiflis. The choir of the same name, founded in 1989, is one of the leading custodians of this rich heritage – and appears only rarely outside Georgia.
