Long-standing Companions

Concerts at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle are currently subject to coronavirus-related restrictions. This event is therefore going ahead with an amended programme and reduced seating capacity. There will be two concerts on 16 November 2020 at 18:30 and 21:00.

Anne-Sophie Mutter was only 16 when she first performed the Beethoven violin concerto together with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, the concerto and its composer have been her constant companions, and it remains one of the central works in her repertoire. But her view of Beethoven and his Violin Concerto has changed radically in the last 40 years, the violinist says.

When she presents her current take on this famous concerto at the Elbphilharmonie during Beethoven Year, she will be accompanied by the Lepizig Gewandhaus Orchestra, an ensemble that has been playing Beethoven pretty much since the music was written. So there can be no question that, especially in 2020, the Gewandhaus Orchestra’s reading of Beethoven under its director of music Andris Nelsons is an event to be reckoned with.
