Symposium from 4 to 6 March 2026 – Private event
Since 2008, the Elbphilharmonie and the Körber Foundation have been inviting movers and shakers from the international concert hall scene every two years to discuss the future of music education. »The Art of Music Education« (TAOME) addresses questions that cultural institutions are facing today. For example: How can concert culture in Europe be kept alive, diverse and attractive to a changing audience? What promises do cultural institutions make to people – and can these promises be fulfilled? Which social developments can be accommodated and which can be contrasted? And what role will concert halls, opera houses, music festivals and music ensembles play in the future? In this tenth edition of TAOME, guests from all over Europe will gather to discuss the topic »Out of Control – (Shared) Responsibility«.
This tenth edition of TAOME focuses on three interrelated topics. An assessment of music education in 2026 examines its position in the concert industry, its resources, modes of operation and developments since the first conference. Under the guiding principle »Out of Control – (Shared) Responsibility«, what it means to share responsibility, authorship and creative power, and what opportunities and limitations participatory cultural work entails will be discussed. Impulses from practice and research, including awareness and anti-discrimination concepts in event management, open our eyes to new forms of coexistence. At the same time, we look to the future: what social upheavals will shape music education in the future? How are the roles of artists changing and in what new contexts can concert experiences arise?
