Description

Max Bruch’s »Scottish Fantasy« and Felix Mendelssohn’s 3rd Symphony, also known as the »Scottish«, are both deeply rooted in the music and culture of the country. On this Scottish evening, the Simeon Orchestra from Hamburg will perform under the direction of Vilmantas Kaliunas.

Mendelssohn’s 3rd Symphony is a four-movement symphony in A minor that reflects his impressions of Scotland during his journey in 1829. He was immediately drawn to the country’s gloomy nature. Rather than quoting Scottish melodies directly, Mendelssohn creates a musical landscape that mirrors the natural scenery of Scotland.

In contrast, Bruch’s »Scottish Fantasy« from 1880 is a concert piece for violin and orchestra based directly on Scottish melodies and folk songs. While Mendelssohn’s work is more of a symphonic poem that captures the landscape and atmosphere of Scotland, Bruch’s piece is a virtuoso concert work that highlights the technical abilities of the soloist while also bringing out the beauty of the Scottish tunes. The brilliant violinist Liv Migdal is truly in her element here.
