Quartonal has its roots in northern Germany with the Uetersen choirboys and is now one of the most sought-after vocal ensembles in Germany. The four singers delight audiences at their concerts not only with their extremely varied repertoire, but also with their dedication to musical detail and not least with their humorous manner. Another hallmark of their work is the extremely homogeneous sound that characterises their music, which transcends the boundaries between eras and styles.

For their debut at the Elbphilharmonie, Quartonal’s programme »Traumgestalten – Christmas and legendary vocal music for four male voices« sets out in search of loving mythical creatures, monstrous fantasy images, magical creations and all kinds of other things worth discovering from the late Romantic period. The works tell of a time in which the Romantic period was characterised above all by fantasy and the importance of emotions, but in which a clear turn towards mysticism and the uncanny can be observed in the texts.

And Christmas and the whole festive season, isn’t it populated by dream creatures? Comforting and positive ones? All of us, whether religious or not, have grown up with the reports of heavenly hosts, impressive angelic messengers proclaiming joy and the mysterious star that the mysterious star that shows the way to rich foreign kings. These mystical events should of course not be missing from this concert at this time of year.
