From Orff to the Orient

»O Fortuna, velut luna, statu variabilis«, usually translated as »O Fortune, like the moon, ever waxing, ever waning«, is one of the most well-known openings of any work for choir and orchestra. When things get dramatic on TV, in films or in adverts, »O Fortuna« from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana often provides the perfect soundtrack. Orff’s music intensifies as it progresses into a series of secular songs filled with opulent tales of food and drink, singing and gambling, joy and temptation, all at the mercy of fortune’s shifting wheel. In contrast to Orff’s choral highlight, the instrumental star of this ProArte concert is Lucienne Renaudin Vary. A fantastic young trumpet talent, her performance of Fazıl Say’s Trumpet Concerto builds a bridge between East and West and proves once again that music knows no borders.
