Description
Beethoven’s five string trios were all written before 1798, and have their own special appeal: the Trio Op. 9 No. 3 marks the beginning of a series of kindred compositions in C minor that are highly passionate and at the same time serious in character. Beethoven’s Serenade Op. 25 belongs to the Mozart serenade tradition, and surprises the listener with its unusual scoring without a bass line and its enchanting light and bright sound.
The contrast with Debussy’s »Six Epigraphes Antiques«, written in 1914/15, couldn’t be greater: the French composer makes characteristic use of »exotic scales«, e.g. from Eastern Asia, Middle Eastern orientalisms, free tonality and a veiled rhythmic foundation. Doppler’s »Hungarian Fantasia« of 1873 is set in the style of the Hungarian Dances by Brahms and Liszt, who were friends of the composer’s family.
