Inspired Chamber Music

When Schubert wrote his Octet in 1824, he based it on Beethoven’s Septet from 24 years earlier, but added another violin to the instrumentation, increasing the density of sound. Carl Nielsen’s »Serenata in vano« is another piece for mixed ensemble, although the composer gave the clarinet an outstanding role. The Schubert and Nielsen works frame Dvořák’s »Terzetto« for high strings.
