Preludes to Silence
The year 2027 marks the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death. To mark the occasion, Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has devoted his recital to the titan of music, performing the composer’s final three piano sonatas – each a groundbreaking contribution to the genre.
With Andsnes, the audience welcomes not only this season’s Artist in Residence with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra but also one of today’s foremost Beethoven interpreters. His legendary »Beethoven Journey«, in which he recorded all the piano concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, has become a landmark project.
Afflicted by illness, completely deaf, yet driven by an unrelenting creative impulse, Beethoven returned to the piano sonata – a genre he had elevated to heights that few would ever reach again. Each of these three sonatas forms a world of its own: the melodic Sonata Op. 109 with its disarming intimacy, the expansive Sonata Op. 110 and, finally, the composer’s last sonata in two movements, which Alfred Brendel described as »the final testament of his sonatas and a prelude to silence«.
