Lauer / Wulff / Strauß // Andrés Coll Odyssey
NDR Jazz in the Rolf-Liebermann-Studio
Description
In 2023, »Talking to You. Christof Lauer« was released in cinemas – a portrait of one of the most important saxophonists in European jazz. »I tell something about myself by playing and by putting sounds together,« Lauer says in the film. For this exceptional artist, jazz is first and foremost communication. He has lived this immersion in the moment with many free spirits: Albert Mangelsdorff, Joachim Kühn, Michel Godard and Marc Ducret as well as for 25 years within the creative circle of the NDR Bigband. Now Lauer meets two leading figures of the younger generation, both recipients of the Hamburg Jazz Prize. Bassist Lisa Wulff, who also received the German Jazz Prize in 2023, has set new standards: both with her outstanding quartet and alongside Rolf Kühn, Wolfgang Haffner and Nils Landgren. Silvan Strauß is a seasoned groove master with astonishing range, evident in his work with Maria João and Giovanni Weiss, in Lisa Wulff’s quartet and in the band ToyToy. In concert, Lauer, Wulff and Strauß merge into a single communicating entity and celebrate the credo: »It has to be intense.” «
At the tender age of three, Andrés Coll was drumming on the piano keys at home on Ibiza; by seven he was studying percussion and marimba, improvising and searching. Then he jammed with Joachim Kühn – and something clicked. Now 24, Coll is on the brink of a major career. Of his debut album »Sunbird«, Kühn said: »Andrés Coll plays the marimba like no one else – with feeling, virtuosity and a vision. For me, he is the new star of the jazz world on mallets.«
At Coll’s side are the Polish violinist Mateusz Smoczyński of the Atom String Quartet, the Moroccan Gnawa legend Majid Bekkas and the Spanish rhythm wizard Ramón Lopez. Each of their concerts is an intoxicating session in which they combine folklore and avant-garde, Balearic and North African traditions with jazz in a way not previously heard. Of his music, Andrés Coll says: »It shows the possibility of accepting moments of chaos, of losing the fear of death and then merging into a collective groove. ›Odyssey‹ is human experience and adventure.«

Location : Rolf-Liebermann-Studio
The Rolf-Liebermann-Studio was a Jewish temple until 1938. Destroyed in the Pogrom Night, ownership of the current Rolf-Liebermann-Studio passed over to the city authorities in 1941, and later to the former Northwest German Broadcasting, which arranged its conversion into a large concert hall. With its classical music concerts, readings, matinees and jazz concerts, the studio is one of the first ports of call for the culturally aware today.
