All Directions

»Good music is like starting a sentence in the middle and then moving towards both the beginning and the end at the same time – in both directions simultaneously,« the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane once said of his music. An all-star band led by Grammy-winning saxophone maestro Joe Lovano has taken this motto to heart and is performing a tribute concert for the jazz legend, who would have turned 100 this year.

Behind the title »Coltrane 100: Both Directions at Once« are modern interpretations of classic Coltrane repertoire alongside original compositions by the outstanding band members, all inspired by Coltrane’s musical legacy. Lovano is joined by Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, who »connects the south of the American continent with the north, Latin American music with jazz« (NDR).

Also joining the ensemble are pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and bassist Linda May Han Oh, both of whom have already thrilled Hamburg audiences on several occasions. The line-up is completed by drummer Jeff »Tain« Watts, who toured extensively with John Coltrane’s wife, the jazz harpist Alice Coltrane, as well as with their son, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane.
