Four strings, infinite tonal colours

Helmut Lachenmann has written three works for string quartet – the supreme discipline of chamber music, or as he himself calls it: a »good, old, venerable and long-established occupation«. Who could be better suited to disrupting the traditional tonal and structural boundaries of this genre than the Swabian native – the uncompromising rebel amongst the composers of the present day? For his 90th birthday, two allied ensembles, Quatuor Diotima and Ensemble Resonanz, play all three string quartets and reveal on one evening the different paths Lachenmann has taken.
