State of the Art

Whether traditional or experimental, tonal or atonal: music of the 20th and 21st centuries is naturally at home at the Elbphilharmonie and can also be experienced in its full range this season with the »State of the Art« subscription

What does today’s classical music sound like? To anticipate the answer that the »State of the Art« series supplies in four concerts: remarkably varied. While Helmut Lachenmann, the most important living German composer, explores the finest nuances on the edge of noise, his British colleague Alex Paxton – recently honoured at the »Elbphilharmonie Visions« festival – goes all out. Even the Baroque harpsichord celebrates a furious comeback with today’s composers, played with virtuosity by Mahan Esfahani. The Scharoun Ensemble, consisting of members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, concludes the programme.
