Description

For the American Dover Quartet, winning the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2013 was the springboard to a great international career. Praised by The Strad magazine for their »exceptional interpretative maturity, tonal refinement and taut ensemble«, the quartet now demonstrates its versatility with works by Joseph Haydn and Antonín Dvořák, as well as a string quartet by the Polish composer Szymon Laks that had long lain in obscurity.

All three string quartets feature eastern European influences of one kind or another. Haydn drew inspiration from the music of the Roma in his String Quartet of 1772. Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 14 is infused with intoxicating polka rhythms. And Polish folk tunes feature in the String Quartet No. 3 by Szymon Laks, who composed this haunting work after his release from Auschwitz in 1945.
