Music brings charges

The Elbphilharmonie is dedicating a special focus to Hans Werner Henze on his 100th birthday as part of the International Music Festival Hamburg. Henze’s artistic forays into the world of film will also be featured: the Zeise Kino is showing Volker Schlöndorff’s film adaptation of»Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum«, based on Heinrich Böll’s novella of the same name and featuring music by Henze. It is a pointed indictment of the power of the media and the loss of individual dignity in the conflict between the state and sensationalism.

In this case, Henze himself asked director Schlöndorff if he could contribute the music. Already a famous composer, Henze, scarred by media scandals, processed his own experiences of character assassination and public humiliation in the music.

The result is a soundtrack that not only accompanies, but also comments and accuses. »It also had something to do with politics. The music could help ring the alarm bells sounded by Böll and Schlöndorff«, said Henze. His chamber music-like sound episodes, interspersed with percussion effects and dark quotations from Wagner’s »Rheingold« became the tonal basis for the film editing—a sinister homage to the Bonn Republic.
