Description

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has long enjoyed a top five position in the best American orchestra rankings. No wonder with a musical director like Riccardo Muti, the Italian maestro who has been at the helm since 2010. Chicago’s concertgoers are enamoured by the charismatic conductor, as demonstrated by the constant new records in ticket sales.

Riccardo Muti represents a long and magnificent tradition. His perfectionism can be traced back to his role model Arturo Toscanini. Muti learned to develop a feeling for brilliant timbres from Herbert von Karajan, who invited him to the Salzburg Festival in 1971. Now, Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are crossing the pond to celebrate the opening of the Elbphilharmonie with two programmes.

Tchaikovsky’s firecracker – his Fourth Symphony – and Richard Strauss’ »Don Juan« are lined up for the orchestra’s zealous second performance. There is no question: this Italian-American dream team pulls out all the stops – from the sophisticated to the furious.
