A conservative composer and a wild one

»I am delighted every time I hear a new work from your pen, and am more interested in it than in my own music. In short, I admire and love you«, Beethoven once wrote to Luigi Cherubini in Paris. The great Viennese composer was notoriously grumpy, and rarely had any friendly words for other people; but for this fellow composer he apparently made an exception. Not only did he hold his Italian colleague’s music in the utmost esteem during his lifetime: he even wished Cherubini’s Requiem to be played at his own funeral.

Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Ensembles take a closer look at this musical friendship. What did the hot-headed innovator Beethoven have in common with the subtle drama of the classically-minded Cherubini?

Hengelbrock and his ensembles have long since gained a firm place on the Hamburg music scene. They regularly delight audiences with cleverly designed concert programmes played on historic instruments. With Beethoven’s pathbreaking »Eroica« and Cherubini’s deeply serious Requiem in C minor, they show once again their ability to entice entirely new sounds from works we think we know well.
