NDR Jazz in the Rolf-Liebermann-Studio
Description
Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders were icons of Spiritual Jazz – a genre born in the turbulent 1960s, shaped by Black Power, cultural awakening and spiritual exploration. In tribute to these pioneers, harpist Alina Bzhezhinska and saxophonist Tony Kofi first joined forces at the 2017 London Jazz Festival. Bzhezhinska, born in Ukraine, studied in Poland and the US and is now a vital force in the London scene, while Kofi, a British-Ghanaian musician and celebrated Thelonious Monk interpreter, has performed with Andrew Hill, Sam Rivers and Ornette Coleman. His piece »Altera Vita«, meaning »another life«, was written in memory of Pharoah Sanders, who passed away in 2022, and became the title track of his collaborative album with Bzhezhinska. »Altera Vita,« the duo says, »is a spontaneous response to a world in urgent need of a reset.” «
»Why go to New York when you can hear Moisés P. Sánchez?« jazz legend Benny Golson once asked after performing with him in Spain. The Spanish pianist is one of Europe’s most compelling jazz voices: his playing is fluid, intricate and emotionally charged – a gift already enjoyed by the NDR Bigband. His album »Metamorfosis« was named Spanish Jazz Album of the Year in 2017; »Unbalanced« earned a Latin Grammy nomination.
His latest release, »Dedication II« (2024), is both a stylistic fusion and a deeply personal musical journey through joy, loss and hope. Together with saxophonist Javier Vercher, bassist Toño Miguel, drummer Borja Barrueta and the luminous voice of Christina Mora, Sánchez dives into lush harmonies and surges through complex rhythms – with irresistible energy and playful sophistication.

Location : Rolf-Liebermann-Studio
The Rolf-Liebermann-Studio was a Jewish temple until 1938. Destroyed in the Pogrom Night, ownership of the current Rolf-Liebermann-Studio passed over to the city authorities in 1941, and later to the former Northwest German Broadcasting, which arranged its conversion into a large concert hall. With its classical music concerts, readings, matinees and jazz concerts, the studio is one of the first ports of call for the culturally aware today.
