Description

Not only does the Elbphilharmonie’s organ take its place perfectly in the spectacular architecture of the Grand Hall, the instrument – which was built by the renowned Bonn-based organ builder Johannes Klais, captured the heart of the titular organist Iveta Apkalna the moment she first played it: »I’ve never come across a concert hall organ quite like it – warm and round and coming up from the depths. This sound really embraces people,« she says. The Latvian master organist is particularly taken by the instrument’s great tonal and dynamic range.

Apkalna’s organist colleagues will surely share this enthusiasm at their guest concerts – the Englishman Thomas Trotter, for example, who has previously performed with Sir Simon Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic. Jean Guillou, the longest-serving titular organist in Paris (at Saint-Eustache), also honours us with an appearance and he will be celebrating his 88th birthday with a performance of his colourful transcription of Mussorgsky’s »Pictures at an Exhibition«.
