The »Pianomania« concert series aims to present piano music that is as contrasting as possible. Last season, the focus was placed on Études and their suitability for the concert hall was put under the test. This season is all about variations. It is astonishing what a clever composer can do with a simple little tune, sometimes creating outstanding masterworks.

Johann Sebastian Bach created 30 variations based on his soothing »Aria«. They became famous under the title »Goldberg Variations«. Handel varied a chaconne 21 times; Mozart wrote popular variations on the song »Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman«. Beethoven composed the fiendishly difficult »Diabelli Variations«, while Brahms and Rachmaninov rhapsodised on melodies by Handel, Corellli and Paganini.

It is, in the original sense of the word, a constantly varying repertoire. At the Elbphilharmonie four rising virtuosos take on this repertoire with the technical skill and musical flexibility to make these pieces sparkle and soar.
