English Baroque Soloists / Sir John Eliot Gardiner / Christoph Willibald Gluck: Orphée et Eurydice
Nordic Concerts • Oper konzertant
Playing music on authentic instruments and according to the stylistic conventions of the period in which it was composed – this convincing and far-reaching concept is called »historically informed performance practice«. In plain English: It allows musicians to dust off classical works and breathe new life into them. The series »Nordic Concerts« presents five outstanding conductors who have dedicated themselves to this cause.
The highlight of the series will undoubtedly be the performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and his ensemble Concentus Musicus Wien, as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival. »Nordic Concerts« opens with Gluck’s opera »Orphée et Eurydice« under the baton of another audience favourite, Sir John Eliot Gardiner. The French conductor Marc Minkowski, a highly respected figure on the early music scene, and Teodor Currentzis will each conduct a concert. The latter established his exceptional ensemble MusicAeterna in Siberia of all places and has been called the »Che Guevara of classical music«. Last but by no means least, François-Xavier Roth and his orchestra Les Siècles will present Ravel and Stravinsky in an impressive new light. Supported by the Stiftung Elbphilharmonie
