With Giuseppe Verdi’s highly dramatic, one might almost say operatic Requiem, Subscription 4 has an absolute treat in store. The Zurich Opera orchestra is conducted by an Italian who was even born in Verdi’s adopted home of Milan, Gianandrea Noseda. Be sure to dress warmly for the opening concert – not so much because it’s November, but because of the concentrated Finnish power. It remains a mystery how a relatively small nation can produce so many talented artists and composers. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra is known for its rich sound. Its chief conductor designate, the charismatic Lahav Shani, is already on the rostrum six months before he officially takes up his post. Last but not least, Daniel Harding and the agile Mahler Chamber Orchestra have a close partnership and a long history. Håkan Hardenberger contributes two (!) trumpet concertos.
