Anton Bruckner has a special standing among symphony composers. Originally an organist, he applied the concept of registration to the orchestra to create masterpieces of overpowering sound. »For me, he is one of the very greatest«, says the Estonian star conductor Paavo Järvi, who is coming to the Elbphilharmonie for three Bruckner concerts.

While Järvi is often in Hamburg performing with the lean Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, for this series of concerts he is accompanied by Switzerland’s weightiest orchestra, whose chief conductor he is too. Järvi has selected three very different symphonies for the extended weekend: the Sixth, which Bruckner regarded as his »boldest«; the epic, 80-minute Eighth; and the Third, which was the Austrian composer’s homage to his great inspiration Wagner.
