Company Structure and Mission Statement
Company Structure
Two companies are responsible for the operation of the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle: HamburgMusik gGmbH (HamburgMusik), and Elbphilharmonie und Laeiszhalle Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (ELBG). While the Laeiszhalle building is owned by the city and is only leased by ELBG, the Elbphilharmonie concert building is owned by HamburgMusik and is leased directly by that company to ELBG.
-
Responsibilities of HamburgMusik
HamburgMusik organises and realises concert events at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle as a non-profit promoter. In addition, the company also organises an extensive programme of music education activities, including events at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle, as well as at other venues around the city of Hamburg. To carry out its work, it receives an annual subsidy of €6 million from the city of Hamburg. 95.2% of the company is owned by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the other 4.8% is owned by the Stiftung Elbphilharmonie.

Responsibilities of the Elbphilharmonie und Laeiszhalle Betriebsgesellschaft
Operating and maintaining the two venues is the Elbphilharmonie und Laeiszhalle Betriebsgesellschaft’s (ELBG) responsibility. The company’s primary activity is the letting of event-ready concert halls. This includes production planning and management on the day of the event, as well as the provision of technical staff, catering staff and front-of-house staff for events. The company is responsible for ticket sales for the events held in the venues and for the operation of the Elbphilharmonie Plaza, and also organises concert hall tours. ELBG is a hundred-percent subsidiary of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The city of Hamburg covers the costs of building maintenance (facility management) via an annual subsidy. ELBG does not receive any financial support from the city of Hamburg to carry out its operational activities – the company finances itself completely independently in this area.

ELBPHILHARMONIE & LAEISZHALLE MISSION STATEMENT
At the Elbphilharmonie, music and architecture merge to create a unique overall experience. The visionary yet inviting building in a striking location on the waterfront offers unrivalled panorama views of the port and the city. The design of the foyers, the impressive acoustics and the atmosphere in the halls with the close proximity between the stage and the audience heighten the senses and facilitate especially intense communal experiences.
The Elbphilharmonie is a concert hall of international standing where artistic innovation and extraordinary creativity happen. It draws top artists and concertgoers from all over the world, while also inviting the population of the city in all its diversity to keep rediscovering the magic of music and to find a place of respectful relating.
The Laeiszhalle represents the history of Hamburg as a city of music and is an important fixed point in the city’s cultural life. The venue offers musicians and ensembles a setting for high-quality events in an elegant, familiar atmosphere.
Current socio-political discourses and changes are reflected in the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle’s programmes and communications. The two concert halls thereby represent the relevance of culture in the lives of every individual, and they actively shape the future of live music and Hamburg’s cultural identity. That is what the concert hall team works to achieve day after day.
