Yo-Yo Ma & Friends
Elbphilharmonie Opening Festival
»East meets West« is the title of the second concert in Yo-Yo Ma’s residency at the Elbphilharmonie, where the world-class cellist plays his way effortlessly across genre and national boundaries. Back in 1998 he founded the Silk Road Ensemble, which brings together artists, instruments and styles from along the historic Silk Road – a kind of pan-Asian all-star group. Among the artists is the Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh; like Ma, Azmeh studied classical music, but he also keeps the folk music of his native country alive, combining the two worlds to create new sounds. The two artists are joined here by Palestinian-Israeli pianist Saleem Ashkar.
Together, they start by playing Brahms’s wonderful Clarinet Trio, before Ma and Azmeh display their cosmopolitan background with the first performance of a piece for clarinet and cello written to commission by Azmeh himself. After this, Ma can be heard performing solo pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach before additional Syrian guest musicians take the podium to offer a preview of the festival »Salām Syria«.
