Winterreise – Vorstudie für ein nomadisches Leben / A Preliminary Study for a Nomadic Life
Institut für angewandtes Halbwissen
With Schubert’s »Winterreise« in its ears and on its lips, the Hamburg-based »Institut für angewandtes Halbwissen« (Institute for Superficial Knowledge) continues its work on estrangement and friendship. The declared aim of this artists’ collective is to keep moving at all times. With Schubert’s romantic song cycle »Winterreise«, opera producer Benjamin van Bebber and performer Leo Hofmann drift through landscapes, hurling all manner of different volumes and tempi into the auditorium, until – somewhere between home and on the road – the boundaries between a settled and a nomadic existence get blurred. The characteristic title of their current programme is »Vorstudie für ein nomadisches Leben« (A Preliminary Study for a Nomadic Life).
The soi-disant »Institut für angewandtes Halbwissen« sees itself as an intervention and production collective: »In our eyes, listening is a chance to participate, and participation is applied superficial knowledge.« This is the group’s creed. Their aim is to create music and theatre that go beyond clearly-defined genre boundaries and the opulent reproduction of existing works; and above all, active listening, also as a philosophical and political element.
