In praise of love

Please note: Yuja Wang unfortunately has to cancel her participation in the concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen at short notice for health reasons. In her place, Bertrand Chamayou will play the piano part in Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony. Tickets retain their validity.

Bertrand Chamayou recently released a highly acclaimed recording of Messiaen’s piano cycle »Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus«, praised as a »multi-layered exploration of the French master who died in 1992«. The French pianist will be familiar to Hamburg audiences from celebrated performances with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and an evening of chamber music with cellist Sol Gabetta.

An encounter between Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Vienna Philharmonic is an extraordinary experience in and of itself – especially when they are joined by a star virtuoso like the French pianist Betrand Chamayou. And when the programme features such an exceptional work as Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Sinfonie, we can justifiably talk about a magical musical moment.

Messiaen composed the epic score as a commission for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which premiered the ten-movement work, a hybrid blending the symphony and piano concerto forms, in 1949 under Leonard Bernstein. As a »storyline« in the background, the work revolves around the well-known medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde.

In a more general sense, the composer also wanted to create a musical monument in honour of the love between a man and a woman. The sound of the enormous orchestra shines in a dazzling blaze of colour, with the electronic ondes Martenot as a second solo instrument, alongside the piano, adding an exotic touch.
