Vienna Philharmonic / Semyon Bychkov
Elbphilharmonie Opening Festival
Visit by an orchestra of the highest quality
It is hard to name another orchestra that has such a long tradition, is so closely connected to European music history, has worked with so many great conductors and has remained on the list of the three best orchestras in the world for so long. Performing in the opening festival of the Elbphilharmonie is the Vienna Philharmonic – a world-class orchestra of the very highest quality. The orchestra is hosted twice in the Grand Hall and conducted by two close friends and collaborators of the orchestra.
In this concert, Semyon Bychkov conducts the orchestra. »The Vienna Philharmonic wants the same thing as me: to find a convincing expression,« said Bychkov, who made his debut with the orchestra at the Salzburg Festival in 2003. A special Hamburg programme has been chosen for the opening festival: Gustav Mahler composed his first symphony during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the local Gänsemarkt opera. He premiered this symphony for the inauguration of the concert hall on the Reeperbahn, which is no longer standing. Bychkov also presents the »Vier ernste Gesänge« (Four Serious Songs) by Johannes Brahms, who has been nicknamed as the son of the city of Hamburg. For the special orchestral version by the former pupil of Henze, Detlev Glanert, Bychkov brings the bass-baritone Johan Reuter along to Hamburg.
