Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra / Andris Nelsons
Beethoven
It must be the most famous descending third of all time: every five-year-old can sing the opening motif from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony – and every mobile phone can play it! The image of Fate knocking on the proverbial door is a vivid one even in the 21st century, and all the more so when the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is playing under the baton of Andris Nelsons.
Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, written at the same time as the famous symphony, is unique for its bold scoring alone: how fortunate, then, that the piano part is performed by Rudolf Buchbinder, and that the other two soloists are familiar partners, namely the principal violin and cello of the Vienna Philharmonic.
