»Überlebensmusik«: Bennewitz Quartet / Hans Christoph Begemann
2. Internationales Musikfest Hamburg
Description
This concert gives prominence to four talented composers sharing the same merciless fate in the hands of the German Nazi Party. The works on the programme were composed in concentration camps and as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival’s series »Survival Music«, two of the compositions will be heard for the first time ever.
Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann and Hans Krása died in Auschwitz, Erwin Schulhoff in the Bavarian detention centre in Wülzburg. Hard to fathom, is how the composers were able to find the strength to write music in the pressurised atmosphere of a detention camp. And more incredibly, it was in these conditions that some of the composers’ best works were produced. With the Czech Bennewitz Quartet and its renowned guests, the composers have gained distinguished interpreters to share their poignant creations.
