Saint-Saëns: Christmas Oratorio
The 23-year-old Camille Saint-Saëns wrote his »Oratorio de Noël« in the space of just 12 days. Lyrical and intimate in character, the work puts us in the Christmas mood on St Nicholas’s Day. This will be the first performance of the French oratorio on historic instruments.
Tonight’s interpretation is based on the new critical edition published by Bärenreiter, with which the internationally acclaimed Balthasar Neumann Ensembles under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock once again present the convincing results of their pioneering work. Vocal and instrumental works from the Russian Romantic period, among them rarities by Pavel Tchesnokov and Pyotr Tchaikovsky, round off the evening with atmospheric and contemplative sounds.
