Authentic Rachmaninov

»What he does with his hands is technically incredible,« said the great Martha Argerich about Daniil Trifonov. »He has tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that.« The star Russian pianist can justifiably be called »Mr Rachmaninov«: he has engaged intensively with the work of his compatriot, who is often called the last Romantic due to his smooth tonal language. Trifonov now performs the Piano Concerto No. 4 with the amazing Philadelphia Orchestra, with which Rachmaninov enjoyed a very special relationship.

After the October Revolution of 1917, Rachmaninov emigrated to the USA, where he regularly worked with the Philadelphia Orchestra. The renowned orchestra also premiered his Piano Concerto No. 4. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the orchestra’s current music director, is continuing this tradition. The dynamic Canadian conducts Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, which was premiered to great acclaim in Saint Petersburg in 1908 – and has remained one of his most popular works to this day.
