Peter Ruzicka is an established name in the international classical music scene, and has had close connections with Hamburg for many years. He teaches at the University of Music and Theatre Hamburg and was the director of the Hamburg State Opera for almost a decade. And as if that weren’t enough, Ruzicka is also very active as a conductor and composer. So it’s only natural that he, in the year of his 75th birthday, also put a work of his own on the programme. His Kammersinfonie – which features an expressive trombone solo in the final movement – was only premiered in 2021.

Please note: Due to illness, Peter Ruzicka unfortunately had to cancel his participation in this concert. Thankfully Massimiliano Matesic has agreed at short notice to take over in his place. The program remains unchanged and tickets already purchased remain valid.

Like Ruzicka, Matesic is a double talent: born in Florence in 1969, he studied conducting and composition there and in Freiburg, among others with Salvatore Sciarrino. As a guest conductor, Matesic has appeared in concerts and radio recordings with numerous orchestras, including the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo and the orchestras of Bern, Basel and Reutlingen.

Matesic and the Kammerphilharmonie also perform Richard Strauss’s »Metamorphosen« for 23 solo strings, in which the composer – despondent as a result of the Second World War – created a melancholic mood of parting. The concert closes with Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony. Schumann said that composing the work, after a long period of depression, had had a »clear therapeutic effect«. And simply listening to it is also bound to get the audience in a good mood – especially when performed by the spirited Bremen musicians.
