Energy and majesty

With the ritual music »Jongmyojeryeak«, the Korean Royal Court Orchestra presents a Gesamtkunstwerk combining music, song and dance. The music serves as accompaniment to an ancestral ceremony practised during the 500-year reign of the Joseon dynasty. In 2008, UNESCO declared »Jongmyojeryeak« part of Mankind’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The royal families of the Joseon kingdom used the Jongmyojerye ceremony to honour former kings. The magnificent and elegant performances were held for five centuries at the Jongmyo shrine, a milestone in the Korean architectural tradition.

The song texts are regarded as an independent genre in the country’s literature. They celebrate the virtues of the ancient Joseon monarchs such as the foundation of the empire, good government and various military achievements. Visitors to the Elbphilharmonie can look forward to a Gesamtkunstwerk full of energy and majesty.

An event put on by HamburgMusik in cooperation with the National Gugak Center of Seoul, the Korean Cultural Centre and the culture department of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. The National Gugak Center’s tour is a joint initiative of the National Gugak Center of Seoul, the Korean Cultural Centre and the culture department of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Berlin Festival, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Philharmonie Köln and the musica viva section of Bavarian Radio.
