The 11 cellists of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra recently caused quite a stir in front of a full house at the Rolf Liebermann Studio and they can now be experienced in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. With the American mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges they have put together a varied programme featuring works by composers ranging from Mendelssohn to Piazzolla.

In this concert the musicians exploit the full potential of this flexible instrument. The cello’s obvious strength is its amazing range. With its C string, it can easily reach the lowest note of a good choral bass singer, and it can soar to the highest reaches of the soprano voice.

No wonder then that composers have always enjoyed bathing in the cello’s rich sound – and that arrangers adapt almost anything they can get their hands on for cello ensembles. This evening’s programme would not be complete without Heitor Villa-Lobos’ classic, the South-American Bach adaption »Bachianas Brasileiras« for cellos and voices.
