Not many people can say what it’s like to have Martha Argerich as a regular guest, to spend whole evenings sitting next to her at the piano and delight the neighbours with spontaneous living-room concerts. One person in that fortunate situation is Anton Gerzenberg, and this is not the only significant connection. Born in Hamburg in 1996 as the son of pianist Lilya Zilberstein and trumpeter Alexander Gerzenberg, he was virtually predestined for a musician’s career.
So it’s hardly any surprise that he won first prize aged nine at the national music competition »Jugend musiziert«, is a multiple first prizewinner of the Hamburg Steinway Competition, and was the victor at the 15th Concours Géza Anda in Zurich in 2021.
But contrary to expectations, pianist was not always his first career choice. Fascinated by the forces of nature, Gerzenberg wanted to become a volcanologist as a child. What a stroke of luck that he met Martha Argerich: »Her playing inspired me, her impetuosity and the way she surges ahead without interrupting the flow.« Today, the piano keyboard is the source of Anton Gerzenberg’s eruptive power.
