Saint-Saëns wrote this impressive work in only 17 days. However, it is so demanding that he was scarcely able to adequately play it himself.
Javier Perianes gives his debut with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra at the side of Eivind Gullberg Jensen, who filled in at short notice last year and gave a highly acclaimed concert. Saint-Saëns is accompanied by two important symphonies from the first half of the 19th century: Beethoven’s far-reaching Eighth Symphony and Schumann’s crisis-laden Second.
