Symphoniker Hamburg / Tanja Becker-Bender / Ulrich Windfuhr
Busoni / Schubert
This very wide-ranging symphonic evening from conductor Ulrich Windfuhr’s »Werkstatt Konzerte« series opens with the world premiere of a composition by Benchao Yang, a doctorate student in the composition class at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.
This is followed by the rarely performed Violin Concerto by Ferruccio Busoni, a sparkling piece of youthful insouciance and freshness, peppered with witty allusions to great predecessors. The highlight of the concert evening is Franz Schubert’s Fifth Symphony. The then 19-year-old had completed this little masterpiece in just a few weeks. First performed in 1816, the work is considered Schubert’s first truly mature symphony and is still impressive today precisely because of its simplicity.
