Symphoniker Hamburg / Sylvain Cambreling
»Himmelwärts« / »Heavenwards«
The Symphoniker Hamburg reaches for the skies in this concert of programme music, which opens with Schumann’s overture full of flourish to Goethe’s »Faust«. Liszt’s »Bergsinfonie« likewise carries us up into airy heights: it describes a poet’s flight into solitude. The portrait of the soul by Berlioz is set in equally mountainous regions: »Harold in Italy« is the melancholy hero of an epic poem by Lord Byron, and Berlioz’s setting is essentially a viola concerto. The solo part tonight is taken by young London musician Timothy Ridout (b. 1995), who makes his first appearance with the Symphoniker Hamburg.
