Symphoniker Hamburg / Sylvain Cambreling
»Zwischen Staub und Sternen« / »Between Dust and Stars«
When Beethoven’s Ninth turns into dust: in Helmut Lachenmann’s compositional commentary, individual particles of the magnum opus are atomised, but then put back together for the performance of the original work that follows. In addition to the famous symphony, tonight’s programme also features Schönberg’s Cantata, which deals with the atrocities of the Holocaust as a musical indictment. In his first concert as principal conductor of the Symphoniker Hamburg, Sylvain Cambreling shows commitment to the cause of humanism just as Beethoven did with the Ninth Symphony.
