Beethoven: Missa solemnis
Missa solemnis
Is this the greatest piece of nineteenth-century sacred music? Beethoven’s monumental »Missa solemnis« went beyond all the liturgical conventions, and is probably the most important mass setting in the German-speaking lands from this time. The composer himself described it as the »greatest work I have ever written«. The piece is a personal confession of faith, translating an understanding of God shaped by the Enlightenment and humanism into music.
