Symphoniker Hamburg / Robert Trevino
»Von der ewigen Liebe« / »Of Eternal Love« / Lux aeterna
Twentieth century music continues to play a secondary role in concert halls. The young American conductor, Robert Trevino, and the Canadian violinist, James Ehnes, are countering this trend with a piece that is seldom performed. With its philosophical foundation, Bernstein’s Serenade remains one of his most personal compositions, and takes a close look at love in all its facets.
On the same programme timelessly valid: Rachmaninov’s darkly compelling »The Isle of the Dead«, Messiaen’s haunting symphonic meditation »Les Offrandes Oubliées« and Bartók’s fiery dance pantomime, which caused such scandal at the opening in 1926 that Konrad Adenauer forbade it.
