Nordic by Nature
After his own honeymoon, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius wrote »En Saga« in 1892: an orchestral fairy tale that doesn’t have any specific content – it gives free rein to the listener’s imagination. Will it possibly transport him towards the Norwegian border? Where Edvard Grieg’s fabulous and catchy piano concerto awaits him with dancing trolls both wicked and kind, which are sure to send one or two shivers down his spine.
After the interval we hear music full of love and fulfilment in the shape of Brahms’s Third Symphony. A sumptuous orchestral score, perfectly set. It is like a musical portrait of an exciting life on which the author looks back in gratitude, yet it is still »absolute music«. Or to quote the composer himself: »I only think music. I am in love with music. I love music, I think only of it, and if I think of something else, then only because music makes it more attractive to me«.
