Description

With its likeable guests Kahchun Wong and Ilya Gringolts, both of whom are making their debut with the Symphoniker Hamburg tonight, the orchestra embarks on a programme of virtuoso and Russian music. Niccolò Paganini was not only a gifted violin virtuoso, he also composed several violin works 200 years ago that have stood the test of time; one such is his Violin Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major. It is coupled with Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s »Pictures at an Exhibition« in the orchestral version arranged by Maurice Ravel. Inspired by an exhibition commemorating the work of his painter friend Viktor Hartmann, Mussorgsky created an impression sequence of musical pictures with highlights that include the wild ballet of the unhatched chicks or the procession to the sound of church bells through the great gate of Kiev.
