Romantic awakening

Half a century and very different living environments separate Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms – and yet the two works this evening, with their melodiousness and folk-like Romanticism, complement each other wonderfully. In Brahms’s Violin Concerto, the violin and orchestra – dispensing with bold virtuosity – are symphonically woven together and are equal in every way. A pastoral mood and lyrical melodies stand in contrast to fierce outbursts and fiery Hungarian-inspired dances.

Far less dramatic, but at least as Romantic is Schubert’s Symphony No. 6, named by the then 21-year-old composer as the »Great Symphony in C«. Free of pathos, the work delights with a weightless serenity, singing melodies and nimble joy.
