»Tastsinnlich«: Prokofiev / Poulenc / Saint-Saëns
In the history of music, too, there are winners and losers: since the 19th century at the latest, the struck strings of the piano have drowned out the softer sound of the plucked harpsichord. All the better, then, that Poulenc combines the Baroque and the modern era in refreshing fashion in his concerto for the harpsichord, an instrument that the Iranian Mahan Esfahani has a command of second to none.
By the same token, Prokofiev indulges in a humorous take on times past in his First Symphony, the »Symphonie Classique«. While Saint-Saëns makes room for more than one keyboard instrument in his Organ Symphony: in addition to the organ, a piano part for four hands completes the orchestra.
