A new spin on folk music
This evening promises a virtuosic programme broadly under the theme of »folk«. At times, Paul Hindemith’s »Symphonic Metamorphosis« has a big-band feel, only to turn, seconds later, to a carnival-band sound – the composer thereby stages a light-hearted parody of German marching music. The Second Violin Concerto of the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski draws on the music of his homeland – he frequently weaves in elements of Polish folk music.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s »Scottish« Symphony signals its folk-music roots in the title. In July 1829, he was inspired to write the work during a visit to Scotland when he saw the palace of Mary, Queen of Scots.
