Under the Spell of Love

Whether the famous knocking motif that opens Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony really represented »Fate knocking on the door« is certainly open to doubt nowadays. Nonetheless, the four magic notes are nothing if not mysterious. In addition to this durable evergreen, chief conductor Sylvain Cambreling presents two works from the Mediterranean countries.

The contemporary Italian composer Francesco Filidei is one of today’s most remarkable composers, while »Liebeszauber« by the Spaniard Manuel de Falla has stood for Iberian musical enchantment for more than a hundred years. Mezzosoprano Catriona Morison, who plays a central role here, can also be heard to good effect on the Symphoniker Hamburg album »Folk Songs«.
