Thunder on the organ, the ringing of bells, a demonic tango: Alfred Schnittke’s cantata »Seid nüchtern und wachet« is a spectacular work that celebrates with obvious pleasure the dark depths of human nature – the legendary story of Doctor Faust’s pact with the devil. The Symphoniker Hamburg assembles a fantastic line-up of artists to stage this bloodcurdling curiosity. And before the interval, we hear another impressive modern work, Richard Strauss’s famous tone poem »Also sprach Zarathustra«.
